Here at The Online Tile Shop we are the place to come for all things tiles. Whether it is outdoor or indoor, we have tiles fit for all the important makeovers that make your house a home.

Once you get onto our site, you’ll see the massive range and variety of different tile options, all made of different materials. We understand this can be daunting at first and can leave you with many different questions racing through your mind.

Our comprehensive guide to tile materials below is going to help you make more sense of our selection of tiles so you can make the definitive decision when choosing tiles for your home.. Be sure to speak with our tile specialists  if you have any more questions, they are on-hand every step of the way until you feel confident with your purchase.

What materials are our tiles made from?

On our webstore you will find outdoor, indoor, bathroom and kitchen tiles. These names are easy to understand so you should be able to narrow down any tile search easily from the off. They do come in different materials though, all with unique properties and benefits.

Our main materials on The Online Tile Shop are:

  • Ceramic

  • Natural Stone

  • Porcelain

Each tile material has its own unique makeup which makes them suitable for different purposes and environments, which we will go over in further detail. We will also cover the different grouts and adhesives you will need for each type of tile we stock - essential for laying your tiles effectively.

- Ceramic Tiles

Ceramic tiles are the first tile material we are covering. Ceramics are made from a mixture of clays, sand and quartz, mixed with water. This results in a natural makeup without any artificial ingredients.

Ceramic tiles can be found in homes, restaurants and other public places. What gives them the wow factor is their affordability. Whilst being low on price, they are made to last making them a cost effective way to remodel your home.

We advise that whilst they can be used in to bathrooms and wetrooms, ceramic tiles are not fully waterproof. This means you may want to opt for one of our other materials if you are tiling an outdoor space or an area where 100% waterproofing is needed.

Mold and damp can be damaging to Ceramic so be sure to be wary of this. Having underfloor heating is a great way to combat unnecessary mold and damp, especially in a kitchen or bathroom and keeps your tiles (and toes) toasty warm!

- Porcelain Tiles

Our second material for our collection of tiles is porcelain. Porcelain in a non-porous material. This means that tiles made of porcelain do not absorb water and are highly resistant to cracking from freezing and thaw.

Porcelain and ceramic tiles do actually have a major difference. They use different clays and are dried differently once made. Porcelain is made from denser clay, manufactured at higher temperatures making it lose its moisture content when in its final tile form.

These properties make porcelain selections an ideal choice for tiling your outdoor space, and an even better choice for those indoor spaces too. If you have little ones or furry friends running around your home, porcelain tiles are the choice you should be considering. Their tough qualities go hand in hand with the easy to clean nature brought forward by this type of tile.

Be sure to be aware of the price, as these tiles can cost more but their durability makes them an excellent, long-lasting investment for your home.

Our range of tile grouts and adhesives go hand in hand with your porcelain tile purchase. If you need a hand with choosing the right one feel free to contact us!

- Natural Stone Tiles

Stones that are a product of the Earth’s geological changes are what would be considered a “Natural Stone”. They are a great option for giving your home a much needed makeover and offer the traditional tones that will bring any room to life. They are extremely tough which is why natural stone is used a lot in outdoor projects and public spaces.

Natural stone tiles would be a perfect addition to a living room space, near a fireplace or on top of underfloor heating. They possess great conductivity and thermal capacity, perfect for the winter months when the winter weather hits.

Remember though, that some before and aftercare is essential for keeping your natural stone finish looking ‘au natural’. If you decide to place your natural stone tiles outside you will need to apply natural stone waterproofing. The application of this doesn’t affect the appearance of your tiles.

There we have it, our guide to the different materials used in our beautiful range of tiles. To fit these tiles perfectly, we have a great selection of grouts, an absolute necessity for any tile installation. They are easy to apply and they make your tiles more sturdy and water resistant giving you more value for money, so make sure to consider them as part of any tile project.

Be sure to take a look through our online tiles if you are in the market for a home makeover done the right way. Our extensive range has been enjoyed by many up and down the country so why not join in with the fun today? And have the home of your dreams tomorrow!

The tiles were a great price compared to other online retailers selling the same tiles. However, £30 for a DHL delivery seemed a bit expensive for a small order (approx 220 15x10cm tiles for a splashback).
