Your Tile Grouting Guide - 2022

Over the past few years my family and I have refurbished our house with brand new tiles. To cut to the chase the makeover was well needed, even our family and friends have agreed!

One thing we underestimated however were the bits in between, the so-called “aftercare”.

We feel that many people will be in this position whether it has been a week or a year since you had your new tiles installed. This is YOUR guide to grouting your tiles. If only we had this guide when we had our new tiles…

What are grouts?

Before you start committing your money to any product we recommend you get to grips with understanding what grout actually is.

Grout traditionally is a dense fluid that strengthens tiles once they have been set down. Grout can also be used to fix down your tiles as well as being used after.

The overall use for grout is fairly clear. It gives your tiles a longer lifespan allowing you to really get value for money. As you will have realised by now, tiling your home is not a cheap gig!

The different types of grouts available

Hold your horses we haven’t finished yet.

Believe it or not there are different types of grout available on the market, with each type having different purposes and properties. They are as follows…

Silicone Grout:

  • Silicone grout is perfect for those using ceramic tiles. With its waterproof materials and strong makeup, the daily use of your bathroom goes through will be able to withstand the force of water. It is a highly flexible grouting option, withstanding natural expansion that tiles experience when put to their usage!

Unsanded Grout:

  • Unsanded Grout is ideal for your kitchen walls and/or bathroom walls. It works generally for more finer tiles. Wall tiles tend to be less abrasive than floor tiles making unsanded grout perfect as it generally preserves the surface of the tiles it is applied to! It is generally more expensive than Sanded Grout, however it is necessary for all wall tiles.

Sanded Grout:

  • Sanded Grout is perfect for when you are tiling your bathroom floor and/or kitchen floor. Due to how much wear and tear your floor will receive, choosing the correct floor grout will save a lot of headache in the long run. Sanded grout is generally more dense, be careful though as the sand finish can cause scratches to your tiles if not looked after properly!

Cement Grout:

  • If you are on a budget then this grout is for you! We must warn you however you will get limited use out of cement grout due to its porous finish meaning any heavy weather changes can become costly for your tiles.

Porcelain tiles work best with Cement based grout, used both indoors and also

Outdoors. If you opt for this grout then be sure to have an extra bag or two on hand as you will need to attend to it on a regular basis for it to keep itself in working order.

Epoxy Grout:

  • If you are not on a budget and are looking for a quick and easy job then the Epoxy Grout is a perfect choice for those looking after their porcelain tiles.

Unlike many other grouts this one does not need sealant applied to it. Better yet if you have a family or any pets, this grout is stain resistant and highly resilient to external pressures and usage!

The grouts available via our webstore are priced fairly and even highlight the specific colours that they work best for. Be sure to check the colouring of your tiles, you do not want to be grouting your tiles with the wrong colours, I can say this from experience!

We stock some of the industries leading brands, and our website is tailored so you can choose your grouts with ease reducing any unnecessary stress you do not want to experience.

There you have it, our complete guide to tile grouts!

Hopefully you feel more confident in picking out the necessary grout for your new tiles. Many overlook grout and how important it really is for your tiles, and that’s before they have even been set!

Very impressed with the service. We were left short of a specific tile when our bathroom supplier went bust. I found them on the Online Tile Shop's website, called them to check and received confirmation they had enough in stock. Delivery was quick and not expensive, and they kept in touch on the delivery progress. Would recommend.

Beautiful tiles that were shipped almost as soon as I ordered. Very happy with the quality. I was not at home for the initial delivery attempt (I expected them to take longer) but this was quickly rearranged for the following day. Great customer service. I would definitely order from here again.

Absolutely first class customer service both online and in person. Delighted with the first set of tiles I purchased, so ordered a second batch of different tiles for another project. I had tiles left over from the first order, so travelled to the store to return and purchase the second order. The staff in store were a delight to deal with and nothing was too much bother. I'll definitely use again!
